Retirement speech jokes that are warm, not awkward
A retirement speech should make the person leaving feel appreciated and the room feel glad to be there. A few gentle jokes help, as long as they are kind.
What makes a good retirement speech
People remember how a leaving speech made them feel. The usual shape is: a warm opening, a short summary of the career, a couple of affectionate jokes, a real story, thanks and a toast. Aim for three to five minutes. If you are speaking for the team, check with colleagues first so you do not repeat each other, and ask the person's family for one detail only they would know.
Opening lines
- We are here to say goodbye to someone who has been here so long that the office plants have forgotten they were ever small.
- After all these years, today is the first time I have seen this person leave on time. We should have had a party sooner.
- They say you should never go to bed angry. After forty years of reply-all emails, I can confirm that is the secret of a long career.
Gentle jokes about work life
- Every retirement present includes a clock. I am told that this is so you can now ignore it.
- Retirement means no more alarm clocks, no more meetings and no more "per my last email". It also means someone else now decides where the biscuits go.
- You have been the person who knew where everything was. Please leave a map.
- You are retiring from many things today, but the printer jam is not one of them. We will still be calling you.
- Your tea round was legendary. We have printed a laminated sheet explaining how you made it.
Jokes about retirement itself
- Retirement is a time when you work every day, but nobody gives you a title for it.
- I asked what they plan to do first. They said, "Absolutely nothing, and I am going to start it on Monday."
- They tell me you have a list of jobs for the garden. We all know you will be at the garden centre café by ten.
- Congratulations on joining the club where every day feels like a Saturday, except you cannot find where Saturday has gone.
The moment that matters
Jokes get a laugh, but a short true story gets a lump in the throat. Tell one specific moment: the day they stayed late to help a new starter, the way they always remembered birthdays, the time they quietly solved a crisis before anyone noticed. Specific beats general. "You were always helpful" is forgettable; "You stayed until seven to help me with my first report and never mentioned it" is not.
What to avoid
- Age jokes. "Old", "past it" and "one foot in the grave" can sting, even said lightly.
- Jokes about the person being replaced or the company being better off.
- Health, money or family.
- Embarrassing stories from before you knew them. Stick to what you saw yourself.
A simple speech template
- Welcome and who you are (one line).
- A joke about the date or the office (10 seconds).
- Career in three milestones.
- One short, true story.
- Thanks, from the whole team.
- Wishes for what comes next, and the toast.
Practise it aloud once, with a timer, and cut anything that does not earn its place. For delivery tips see how to tell a joke. If it is a family occasion instead, our wedding jokes use the same kind-first approach.
